By making a submission to the Unsent Letters Project, you agree that your letter becomes the sole property of the Unsent Letters Project and it’s organizers. If you have authorized us to do so, your letter may be reprinted, either online or in print, at the discretion of the Project organizers.

The submission process itself separates the letters according to publish or do not publish to prevent any confusion between the two. You cannot submit a letter without telling us your wishes. Because your visit is anonymous this is the only means we use to separate them. While we may collect site visit data for purposes of measuring the project’s success, we will not be able to tie that data to individual submissions. This is by design.

If you have indicated that your letter may be reprinted, your letter will be checked for personally identifiable information. If you have accidentally identified someone by their full name it will be edited to protect their identity. If the individual being identified is a public figure it will remain as is. If in doubt, the privacy rights of the individual in question trump their public figure status.

Your decision to allow us to reprint your letter is final. We cannot track submissions and still maintain anonymity, to do so would damage the integrity of the Project. If you wish to monitor the progress of the Unsent Letters Project, you may sign up for our email newsletter (forthcoming).

Since we are asking for your participation we will do everything humanly possible to ensure your letter makes it through the duration of the project. Letters will be stored on two separate servers, and project archives will be stored in an offsite location. ALL letters submitted to the Unsent Letters Project will be archived as part of our regular backup procedures. If you have not authorized your letter to be reprinted the archive will be destroyed at the end of phase two. Letters authorized to be shared will be archived indefinitely. Archives may be maintained in separate locations but will follow the same safeguards outlined above.
